Johnson County is home to a growing number of trails throughout the county. These trails consist of walking/hiking trails around Paintsville Lake State Park, the Dawnkins Rail Trail, and several include picturesque waterfalls and historical sites. The Dawkins Rail Trail was recently paved in Jonhnson County. Many of these trails can be found using the Alltrails website or app. Johnson County is also home to a growing number of ATV trails and outdoor riding experiences. Dawkins Line Rail Trail<p></p>The entire 36 miles of the trail, stretching from Hagerhill in Johnson County to Evanston in Breathitt County, is now open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The first 25 miles up to Tip Top Tunnel features 24 trestles and the 662-foot Gun Creek Tunnel. While the final 11 miles is now complete, Tip Top Tunnel is not open; thus, the Evanston side is only accessible from Breathitt County. Parking is available at Jenny’s Creek, Swamp Branch, Royalton, and Jane Beshear trailheads.

Best Trails in Paintsville Lake State ParkThis park has many trails along the shoreline and by steep cliffs. Boaters and fishermen will enjoy the lake. There also campgrounds available in the park.
